I burned my broccoli. I apologized – to God and to the broccoli. It could be said that the broccoli has no soul,
so has no appreciation of care, and while I expect a broccoli soul would differ from a human soul (yet I can imagine otherwise), I see no benefit from deciding broccoli has no soul. Reductive rationalism can help free us from some superstitions and be better managers/caregivers of the world. But if in the pursuit of being ‘realistic’ (modern/’mature’) we subtract from the world enchantment — oops! The most efficient and ecological way to improve our standard of living is to re-invest the world with imagination.
When I am watering plants, or planting seedlings – untangling roots that have become congested in their starter containers – I can experience an awakening: I’ve been treating these plants as things when I can relate with them as beings. When I do, the world gains dimensions, life enters my soul. And I realize how I can do the same thing with people – make them things, or thous.
Before, I surrounded Mom (who has Alzheimer’s, etc) with plants. Now Mom and I immerse ourselves in creating caring with our plants.
How do you talk with plants?
