A Globe & Mail feature article – in video, photos and text – by Ian Brown, the host of multiple television and radio programs, such as TVO’s pre-eminent documentary series Human Edge, TVO’s Gemini-award-winning The View from Here, CBC Radio’s Talking Books, …. www.theglobeandmail.com/boyinthemoon

Here are excerpts from some of the readers’ comments:

Karl Rainer from Nanaimo writes: Every so often I come across a piece of writing which terrifies me, challenges me, and awes me at the same time. This is one of those….

Lynda Arbour from Toronto writes: This achingly poignant love story of the struggle of Johanna, Ian and Hayley to improve the quality of Walker’s life, with so little medical assistance, is compelling reading. I do not believe that God creates damaged children, but that these gifts of God are part of the randomness of evolutionary creation, and that they have their purpose. … The character of these families is tested in ways that most of us could never imagine.

Shelley Aubrey-Young writes: … [Our son] was severely developmentally delayed, never even able to hold his own head. He suffered daily with seizures that never were controlled despite a full roster of anti seizure meds. His brain had no sleep cycle and so I empathize with the sleep deprivation and have also used all the meds. I also felt that same relief when he was asleep, the only time he was at peace. … We love him endlessly and looked for every blessing we could in his life. The life lessons we learned from him were profound and because of him we are better parents to our children, better spouses to each other and everyday we aspire to make a difference as better human beings. The lessons are worthy but the cost to our son was far too high.

My son Matti Service was born with an extremely rare condition called Fibrositis Ossificans Progressiva in 1981. After three years, we knew only that there was one child in Texas with the same condition. I finally found my way into the stacks at the University of Ottawa medical library and looked up the condition and found pictures and information that made my blood run cold. Thank the goddess for the human inclination to denial…because you have to be in denial to deal with the sort of information that parents of severely disabled kids have to process. Matti died when he was eleven. His short life and death changed my life forever in both the best and worst possible ways. I had to read Ian Brown’s story in small increments…thanks for the truths and the insight.
