Do you have a room or an apartment you should rent, but think you can’t? My story might help you. — Do you or a friend want to rent a place in Toronto? You can – see details at the bottom. For years we’ve had Potential Lost – an underused basement apartment. I wanted to rent it out, but Mom was paranoid. (Properly speaking: paranoid.) She did not want visitors because she did not people to know how forgetful she is. She did not want home help because she did not strangers in the house, touching her. She certainly did not want live-in help. If she heard a sound she could not identify, she got anxious - especially if she was home alone. We have had ‘billets’ stay during festivals and conferences. Mom enjoyed the company, but thought if they had stayed for an extended time, and were paying rent, we’d meet their true nature. We have rented the basement twice to two different people who needed a place to stay for a month. Now we have had a tenant for four months. Mom delights in hearing him – “Is that the man in the basement?!” He has joined us for dinner on several occasions. Alas, he has a job offer which means he does not need a place in Toronto in January, and if he returns in February he hopes to be in an apartment that’s taller – he’s 6’2″, the apartment is mostly 6’3 but in one spot is 6’1.5″. So:
234 Keele St separate entrance, illuminated walkway. 2 big blocks north of Bloor 1.7 bus stops north of Keele Subway Station, near High Park, Toronto. $720/month Possible use of: garden, deck, barbecue, piano, internet www.imagiscape.ca/contact.htm Available Dec 31, 2007

I write this here because I expect most people are like I was – thinking I can’t rent out this apartment because (a) Mom will get upset, or (b) no one wants to live near someone who has Alzheimer’s. But Mom is so much happier now. A few years ago – before I loved her – she was bitter, distrustful, and had frequent loud tantrums. Now, our house is our home, so much that we welcome others in.
