"The value of sport as a mechanism to achieve development and peace has gained significant international recognition over the past several years. Sport activities are being used to address conflict resolution and ethnic reconciliation, educate children and youth about HIV/AIDS, and mobilize audiences in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)," says UNDP Assistant Administrator Mr. Bruce Jenks, Chair of SDP IWG.
| What is Sport for Development? Sport for Development evolved out of the growing evidence that strengthening the right of children to play enhances their healthy development and builds stronger communities. Sport* is now recognized by many as an effective tool in the pursuit of development and peace including international experts in the fields of development, education, health, sport, economic and conflict resolution. 1. Well designed sport and play programs put children on a positive path to healthy development. Regular physical activity and play are essential for physical, mental, psychological and social development. 2. Sport and play improve health and well being, extend life expectancy and reduce the likelihood of several non-communicable diseases including heart disease. 3. Sport and play also serve as tools to teach important values and life skills including self confidence, teamwork, communication, inclusion, discipline, respect and fair play. Sport also has psychological benefits such as reducing depression and improving concentration. 4. Sport has a positive impact on child education. Physical education typically improves a child’s ability to learn, increases concentration, attendance and overall achievement. Children learn better when they are having fun and being active. 5. Inclusion of women and girls. The skills and values learned through sport and play are especially important for girls, given that they have fewer opportunities than boys for social interaction outside the home. Through sport, girls are given the chance to be leaders, improve their self-confidence and self-esteem, acquire new interpersonal links and access new opportunities. 6. Sport is a catalyst for the economic development of communities and nations. Training of coaches and physical education teachers leads directly to jobs; sport events can have significant economic impact; and sport manufacturing can be a low resource economic activity. 7. The
popularity and convening power of sport provides us with a powerful
tool for reaching people and communicating important messages including
messages of health and peace. Sport brings people
together and has the potential to cross boundaries and
open new dialogue. Many of the core values of sport parallel those
necessary for peace, such as respect, justice and honesty. |

Why is play so important? Can play really be a path to peace — a long-term solution to the intractable patterns of violence?
In a pure state of play, defenses crumble and people are no longer conscious of the self. When we laugh, fear melts away. The atmosphere of play enables people to connect directly, unfettered by prevailing prejudices.
Attitudes change and people connect as they open their hearts to new friendships once considered impossible. Rather than looking backward to clashes and heartache, people look forward in a spirit of collaboration and conciliation. Former enemies come together to create a place to live in peace side-by-side.
Human beings remember emotion-laden events far better than neutral experiences, which is one reason why moments of joy or despair can leave profound, ineradicable impressions.
The buoyant emotional charge of play, according to some neuroscientists, can spark chemical processes that help the formation of strong memories. Positive encounters of any kind will encourage the growth of new pathways in the brain's networks.
And positive encouters with people considered different — people whom children might normally be taught to fear, taunt, or hate — will lead to long-term, positive hard-wiring of the brain’s limbic system, the seat of the emotions.
Play and highly-charged, energetic positive interactions will form the foundation for a new mindset.
Play for Peace is not a top-down organization. We encourage growth of local organizations to make our global efforts more vital.
Play for Peace is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Global operations are governed by a board of Directors comprised of leaders in business administration, education, philanthropy, organization development and medical research. Behind the stories of community transformation is a solid global organization with dynamic structure and responsible stewardship.
Hub Organizations with appropriate credentials are authorized to begin laying the groundwork necessary to establish a Play for Peace Region.
Play for Peace has several firmly established Regions around the world, with others currently in development. Each Hub Organization employs Lead Representatives and other local Representatives to assist communities in implementing the Play for Peace Process. These Hub Organizations, Lead Representatives and Representatives facilitate the linkage between their communities and the global organization.
Hub Organizations, Lead Representatives and Representatives then identify and procure Partner Organizations within their communities.

Craig read an article about a 12-year old boy who had been sold into slavery at age 4, escaped at 10, and at 12 was shot dead for speaking out against child slavery. He brought it to his grade 7 class.
People were amazed to see twelve-year-old children working for other children, speaking about human rights? We were an oddity. ... We realized that not only did children like Iqbal need to be freed from physical enslavement, but children like us needed to be freed from the misconception that we were not smart enough, old enough, or capable enough to contribute to social issues.
Vance spoke about Iqbal. Ashley told the story of a young girl named Easwaris who worked in a fireworks factory. Her job was loading the sulphur and charcoal into the fireworks tubes. There had been an explosion in which Easwaris's eight-year-old sister had been killed, and she herself now had scars lining her back and arms.
By the end of the presentation, the students were just as shocked as we had been when we first heard about child labour. We left them with a challenge to take their first action and write a letter. It could be to a company, asking them to ensure that their products were child-labour free, or to a world leader, challenging them to put more money into education and the protection of children.

Is Earth merely a speck of dust lost without significance in the universe? Or, is our planet the product of intelligent design? Today, scientific evidence indicates that the many factors that make Earth suitable for complex life also provide the best conditions for astronomical discovery. The Privileged Planet explores this intriguing correlation and its implications on our understanding of the origin and purpose of the cosmos.

In this era of multiple shopping channels and Amazon.com, consumer culture is in its prime. Now more than ever we are losing our sense of where and by whom our goods are produced. We can buy a hat from Banana Republic or a frozen potpie from the grocery store and never think about where it actually comes from.

Now Magazine's Best of Toronto
GREEN ROOFs
Time for a little dancing on the ceiling. Toronto's the very first municipality in North America to take on a comprehensive green roof plan. After discovering that blanketing just 8 per cent of our rooftops with greenery would save the city a cool $300 mil in energy costs and storm water overflows as well as a 2 degree drop in the steamy urban heat island effect, council signed on to the plan last February. A city pilot project is now subsidizing private roof greening.
